Burnhouse Engineering was commissioned by a global fit-out, technology, and construction company to deliver a high-specification glass balustrade as part of a hotel conversion in one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious addresses — Princes Street, overlooking the iconic Princes Street Gardens.

The project was awarded to Burnhouse following a competitive tender process, reflecting the company’s proven ability to deliver quality engineering solutions on time and within scope.

Client Engineering Breif

The client’s architects provided the initial design for a glass balustrade to be installed on level 4 of the hotel’s external façade. Burnhouse Engineering was tasked with manufacturing, delivering, and installing the finished structure to meet both safety and aesthetic requirements.

Engineering Methodology

3D Modelling & Design Review

The architect’s drawings were recreated in SolidWorks to produce a 3D environment model. This process enabled Burnhouse to identify design anomalies early in the project. Practical engineering solutions were proposed and accepted by the client, preventing costly changes and delays later in the build.

Fabrication

All manufacturing took place at Burnhouse’s Ayrshire workshop using a combination of carbon steel, aluminium, and structural glazing. Each component was fabricated to precise specifications to ensure a perfect fit during installation.

On-Site Installation

The completed balustrade sections were transported to site and installed in coordination with the client’s construction team on levels 3 and 4 of the building’s external fascia. Burnhouse’s engineers drilled and fitted 60 brackets to secure the glass panels in place. All safety measures were provided by the client, ensuring a safe and efficient installation process.
