Flat Bed Laser Cutting

Sheet Metal and Flat Bed Laser Cutting Services in Scotland

Burnhouse Engineering provides precision sheet metal laser cutting services for businesses across Scotland and the wider UK. Using our powerful 12kW fibre laser, we produce custom-cut components from mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium for prototypes, replacement parts and repeat production.

Our flat bed laser cutting capability combines computer-controlled accuracy with the power to process both sheet metal and thicker plate. We can produce brackets, panels, base plates, gussets, flanges and complex custom profiles directly from your drawings.

Laser cutting is supported by our in-house metal folding, drilling, tapping, welding, fabrication and assembly services. You can order individual laser-cut components or ask Burnhouse to manage the complete fabrication process.

Send us your DXF, DWG, STEP or PDF drawings, together with the material, thickness and quantity required, to request a quote.

Precision Sheet Metal Laser Cutting

Flat bed laser cutting uses a CNC-controlled laser to cut shapes from flat sheets and plates.  The cutting path is created from a digital drawing, allowing complex profiles, holes, slots and detailed features to be produced accurately and consistently.

Compared with traditional mechanical cutting methods, fibre laser cutting can provide:

  • High levels of cutting accuracy
  • Clean and consistent edges
  • Repeatable results across production batches
  • Efficient cutting of detailed profiles
  • Reduced material waste through effective nesting
  • Faster production of complex components
  • Less secondary preparation for suitable parts

The process can be used for everything from an individual replacement part to a large batch of repeat components.

Cutting Tolerances: A typical cutting tolerance of approximately ±0.5mm can be achieved, depending on the material thickness, profile geometry and project requirements.   If your component has critical dimensions, fits or assembly requirements, please identify these clearly on the drawing. We can then review the tolerances before production begins.

Our Flat Bed Laser Cutting Capabilities

Burnhouse Engineering operates a 12kW CNC fibre laser from our engineering facility in Beith, near Glasgow. This gives us the capacity to cut thinner sheet metal as well as heavier plate for industrial, manufacturing, construction and engineering applications.

Maximum Sheet Size. Our flat bed laser cutting machine can accommodate sheets measuring up to:   3000mm × 1500mm.  This allows us to manufacture a broad range of components, from smaller brackets and fittings to larger panels, base plates and structural parts.

Materials and Cutting Thicknesses . Our typical cutting capabilities include:

  • Mild steel up to 60mm
  • Stainless steel up to 40mm
  • Aluminium up to 25mm

Maximum cutting capacity will depend on the material grade, thickness, component profile and required edge quality. Our team will review your drawings and specifications before confirming the most appropriate method.

Custom Cut Sheet Metal Components

Our custom sheet metal cutting service allows components to be manufactured to your own drawings and specifications.

Typical laser-cut components include:

  • Brackets | Base plates | Flanges | Gussets
  • Machine guards | Equipment panels | Enclosures
  • Mounting plates | Structural fittings
  • Decorative panels
  • Replacement machine parts
  • Components for welded assemblies | Bespoke metal profiles

If you do not have a production-ready drawing, our engineering design team may be able to help develop your initial sketch, existing component or concept into a suitable manufacturing drawing.

Prototypes and One-Off Components

Sheet metal laser cutting provides an efficient way to turn a design into a physical component. It is particularly useful during product development because a component can be tested and adjusted without the need to manufacture dedicated cutting tools.

Burnhouse can support:

  • Initial prototypes and design trials
  • Replacement parts | Test components
  • Bespoke one-off products
  • Low-volume production

Our engineers can also review how a component will be folded, welded or assembled, helping to identify potential manufacturing issues before the metal is cut.

Batch and Repeat Production

CNC sheet metal cutting provides consistent results across production batches. Once the correct drawing and revision have been approved, the same component can be produced again for future orders.

This makes flat bed laser cutting suitable for manufacturers, fabricators and engineering businesses that require a dependable supply of repeat components.

To help us quote accurately, let us know the expected quantity and whether the requirement is likely to become regular or repeat work.

Mild Steel Sheet and Plate Laser Cutting

Mild steel is widely used in general engineering, construction, manufacturing and fabrication. Our fibre laser can cut smaller precision parts as well as substantially thicker mild steel plate.

Typical mild steel components include:

  • Brackets and mounting plates | Structural base plates
  • Gussets and stiffeners
  • Machine components | Flanges
  • Access panels | Structural fittings
  • Replacement parts | Components for fabricated assemblies

Our laser cut steel service can be used to produce one-off custom-cut steel sheet and plate components or repeat production quantities.

Once cut, components can be folded, drilled, tapped, welded or assembled within our workshop. This means you can order individual parts or ask Burnhouse to provide a more complete fabricated product.

Stainless Steel Sheet Laser Cutting

Stainless steel laser cutting is suitable for applications where corrosion resistance, strength, cleanliness or appearance is important.

Burnhouse supports stainless steel projects for sectors including food and drink, pharmaceutical and life science, manufacturing, marine and process engineering.

Typical applications include:

  • Equipment panels | Machine guards
  • Hygienic production components | Stainless steel brackets
  • Process equipment parts | Enclosures
  • Covers | Protective plates
  • Components for stainless steel assemblies

Our flat bed laser allows us to produce custom laser-cut stainless steel sheets with detailed profiles and consistent dimensions.

Where further fabrication is required, the components can pass directly into our in-house TIG welding, orbital welding, folding and assembly processes.

Aluminium Sheet Laser Cutting

Aluminium combines relatively low weight with strength and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for machinery, equipment housings, architectural features and other applications where weight needs to be controlled.

Our fibre laser can produce custom-cut aluminium sheet components for:

  • Machinery and industrial equipment
  • Equipment housings | Panels and covers
  • Transport applications
  • Architectural projects
  • Lightweight frames | Brackets
  • Bespoke engineering assemblies

Our team can review the grade, thickness and component design before cutting begins. We can also advise on any subsequent folding, welding or fabrication work required to complete the product.
